A year on and you still have to call EE to manually transfer the data plan to your new watch. At least it's a pretty painless process now.

It took around 10 minutes after the call for the data plan to activate and it's working fine now.
Glad it was a painless process, it just seems like it would free up everyone’s time if they could automate this like the eSIMs on the iPhones. Maybe next year!

I've just heard from a friend who had a Series 7 on Three's mobile data plan. They bought the new Apple Watch Ultra, unpaired the S7, paired the Ultra using the S7 backup and it worked right off the bat. No calling Three with the new EID - just worked.

That’s great to hear.
Hopefully we will hear the same from EE customers as well.

It’s annoying and disappointing that the process is not as seem less as that with EE. When I got my Series 5 at launch several years ago I had to call them. Same again when I got my Ultra and again when I swapped it for another Ultra a week after.

I returned my Series 8 and got the Ultra last week. Unfortunately, EE cocked it up this time and the only option it was offering me was to take out a new plan at £7. I asked to be put through to level 2 support and they fixed it in about 2 minutes :)

I think even Vodafone let you transfer the eSIM to a new Apple Watch online now. Not sure about O2.

Make sure you check your bill: when they ‘fixed’ this for me last year I ended up with two Watch data plans running in parallel…

I didn't actually take out the £7 one which it was offering - I just asked them to reinstate the existing one. Looks OK in my EE account.

I had to replace my ultra today due to a band fitting issue. Set the new watch up, called EE with the usual 03 message and they transferred my plan over. All d8ne in 10 mins. Never had an issue since the series 3 although I did ask why it was such a laborious process to have to contact EE to transfer the plan and he said that it was a security thing to stop misuse or theft of data plans. I guess from what he said, the EE have no plans to change the process.

I followed this Apple support document to first remove my plan on the Series 6 (via the iPhone Apple Watch app) before setting up the Ultra. Then I just followed the relevant instructions on the Ultra and iPhone when they popped up. Transfer took about two minutes.

You didn’t have to call EE? I think most of us here have followed the same procedure and been told to call EE and quote code 003.

At least it shows that there are plenty of providers who can handle changing a watch!
I’m on AT&T in the US. I didn’t have to remove anything, just turned the new watch on, scanned the setup code with my phone, for cellular it gives 2 options - set up new line or use the existing line, it shows you the phone number so you know you have the correct line, picked that option and it all got set up a couple minutes. Then I unpaired the old watch since I was trading it. Fortunately no need to contact AT&T.
