Hello,
Does anyone have any direct experience of doing this? EE won't do it. The agents say that it can be done, but not by them.
There are plenty of eBay listings claiming to do it, but am dubious as to exactly how (plus they aren't exactly cheap in comparison to regular unlocking services).

The plan was to order an 8 or 7 (or maybe even an X if I could get that unlocked) today if I can find somewhere that can do this.
Fairly confident that no-one can touch the retention deal I have been offered even taking into account possible costs for unlocking, so don't intend to go to a different network that supplies unlocked or will unlock immediately, but to be honest this is an absolute deal breaker, primarily for heavy travel purposes. Having a brand new 8/X/whatever but having to use my ancient 5s because I can't slot in a local sim and the country isn't covered by the roaming agreement (at least at a sensible cost) is not ideal really!

Thanks in advance.

EDIT - Well aware what EE's policy on their website is. Looking for another - reliable, and ideally verified as having been used by someone on here - way to get this done, which from the amount of eBay listings it seems is possible...unless they are all lying.

As far as I’m aware devices under 6 months from EE if get unlocked will just be locked down by EE and therefore unusable

Not something I would risk to be honest

this Is from there site

With iPhone's you'll only ever be able to get the device unlocked with the mobile network it is locked to; dodgy dave's online or the local phone shop won't work. A few years ago there we're a few work arounds; however nowhere days iOS is fairly solid. Therefore your pretty much tied to what ever the mobile network's terms are; eg with EE you need to have had the contract at least 6 months - at that point they will then go to Apple to remove the activation lock from their servers.

Given this is pretty old and archaic; just the network's way of tying people in...some network's no longer lock you down and some countries have abolished altogether.

EE are pretty old fashioned with phone unlocking and seem to charge a fee. I’m on O2 and you can unlock your phone for free at any point after the contract starts. I really don’t know why EE are still pulling this scam after so many years?

Yes it is very old fashioned.
I have no objection to paying a fee (albeit it is a pretty ****** stealth fee to charge your own customers)...the issue is the total refusal to have any discretion in applying the policy even for (very) long term customers without so much as even a single missed payment.
They claim the reason for the blanket policy is fraud - presumably credit-mule type fraud, of people getting expensive phones and then reneging on contracts - so they state that they 'own' the device for six months after contract commencement.

Just to conclude this in case anyone else is looking, or finds this via a search, I found someone reliable who did it for me.
Had to pay a chunk, but it ('it' being an iPhone 8) is done - absolutely no thanks to EE.

If anyone needs details, happy to put them in touch.

Out of interest; how was this done?

As far as I’m aware the phone would still need details changing on Apple’s activation servers and Apple will only speak with the carrier in question..

Honestly, I have no idea. I figured it was maybe people who work for the network being given brown envelopes to push it through on the sly, hence the higher cost. I did ask, and was just told it was all legit and processed on server.
It took a couple of weeks to do (allowing for holiday delays of course) and the phone is 3000 miles away from the person who unlocked it. Was sceptical, but it has been done.

Does anyone still know anyone that can unlock an iPhone 11 max within 6 months on EE contract, reliable source preferably???

I don’t think there is an official way to do it other than through the carrier. I certainly wouldn’t trust someone on eBay claiming they can do it.

I always buy out of contract, directly from Apple as to avoid this issue.

To be honest I’m surprised it’s still allowed to lock devices to a carrier, seems very backwards.

You need to be careful - an iOS update could just lock the previously unlocked iPhone. Just depends how the handset was unlocked in the first instance.....

I don't think there's much on the software side of things these days when it comes to unlocking. It's all mostly on server side of things (on carrier/Apple side), so something like an update wouldn't affect that.

Yes an update wouldn't affect that, but how the OP found a single individual to unlock his handset the 'proper' way against Apple activation servers is somewhat questionable.... most of the time these individuals perform a software unlock, which relocks with an update, and are never to be seen afterwards......
I'm always weary about that kind of scenario. Maybe its just me being OTT. But nevertheless that's why I always purchase the handset from Apple outright.
