I'm a drinker, man...but there's only one drink I don't like...Egg Nog. How did they think that up? "I want to get a little drunk, but I also want some pancakes." Do you know what Egg Nog really is? You're not gonna want to hear it but I'll tell you...ELF CUM! That's what it is! You might as well pour it on your back and slap yourself on the ass. - Dave Attell

I've honestly tried to find Dave Attell funny - even when he did that "late-night job show" but seriously - Terminal Cancer is funnier than that guy.

hmmm...thanks for reviving this thread. I hadn't seen it before.

The best egg nog I've ever had was from Purity Dairy in Ithaca, NY. nothing--absolutely nothing--else that I've tried compares to it. It was more pure when I was a kid (20+ years ago), but even with added carrageenan it's the best ever. Incredibly thick, terrific taste.

Most commercial ones are too sweet and gummy (hood) or too plain (horizon if I remember correctly).

I made it myself 2 years ago and it had a tendency to separate, but tasted pretty good. I may have to do it again this year if I can't find anything like Purity.

Yeah, I wanted to rename it: "Ye Olde Eggnog Threade" but it wouldn't let me.

I've tried most store brands, but I've never heard of the one you mentioned. I'm always game to tried new ones. Although I almost died when I tasted the Kroger Brand Lowfat Eggnog. Seriously I just about barfed. The nog flavor was almost like perfume. *blach*

Purity is a local dairy in Ithaca. I currently live 4-5 hours from there. The round trip is a little too much just for eggnog. My local dairy (Highlawn Farm) sells eggnog, but it's not their own and not particularly interesting. strong nutmeg flavor, but still fairly artificial tasting.

Lowfat and eggnog are words that should not go together. yeecch.

We don't get Egg Nog in the UK except for at Starbucks... have to say that I have been hooked for years on their Eggnog Lattes. It's like Christmas in a cup! ;-)

Just as well I don't live in the US or I'd be chugging boatloads of the stuff!

Yes!! It drives my family crazy, but I can't stop myself. I agree that the Horizons Organic Egg Nog is the best. I do like to add a bit of brandy to it if I can. I need to buy brandy!

@nomad01: Egg nog is sweet, but it's not as sweet as Starbucks in the UK makes it.

I think the only problem with making your own eggnog is the lack of homogenization (is that really a word?). It may separate and get icky.

would it at least last a couple hours for a party? Also, what about putting in in a jug that could be vigorously shaken prior to each pour, would that help?

Thanks.

That was my problem when I made it. It separated out pretty quickly. I put it in mason jars that I shook just before serving and it generally lasted long enough for consumption. I'll have to figure out a better way this next go around.

I may be heretical to some here, but I prefer my eggnog undiluted by alcohol. That's good as a drink and all, but it just gets me thinking about what it'd be like straight up.

You know what's the best?
Store bought eggnog with a little bit of bailey's and nutmeg sprinkled on top!

My favorites this year have been Horizon Organic Egg Nog,

Just tried this again and its horrible. Tastes like banana milk with the consistency of clam chowder soup. Not good.

I love it. This time of year, my wife and I can't seem to come back from the store without some. It's especially good with a little Kahlua. ;)

Well, it's been three years since I shared my opinion of eggnog in this thread, and...

...I still can't stand the stuff. :p

Here is a barf smilie for you...

No, but snowballs are delicious. Advocat, Vodka, Lemonade and a squeeze of lime. Brilliant.

I'm glad someone asked that. I have been wondering for years!

It's nog of eggs. Duh.

Actually, the definition varies, but usually it's milk or cream (or both, possibly), with some beaten eggs and sugar. Optionally, you can add your favorite alcohol for flavor only, of course. :)

All you ever wanted to know about eggnog.
