I'm considering getting an eGPU when my 2018 Mac Mini arrives.

I understand if I got say a 5600 XT or 5700 XT, Mac OS would work great with it for video editing.

However, if I boot into windows, I understand, that is much more finicky because Windows doesn't like AMD as an EGPU is that correct?

My goal would be with my display plugged into eGPU to boot into whichever OS I wanted and it just work without hassle each time, not thing about it after setting it up. Is that unrealistic? Thank you.

Maybe things are better? But for me I gave up on boot camp-2018 MAC Mini - eGPU. After a few Window updates taking me back to ground zero, I was not going for round 3. My bubble bursted and had enough.

good luck though and let us know if it works smoothly.

I’ve had a relatively painless experience with my eGPU set up through Boot Camp. My only gripe is that I can’t use Startup Manager when my displays are connected directly to the eGPU. I need to use Startup Disk preferences each time I want to boot into the other OS which is a bit of a pain

Thanks, that's good to know. I wonder if you've had a better experience because you have a 580? It has been around long enough, maybe it's more straightforward with regards to the drivers and whatnot? I'd consider getting the 580 if it meant I'd have a less painful experience than the newer cards.

It's a bit of a shame there's not an AIO solution anymore too. I know you couldn't upgrade it then, but it would be nice to just buy a single unit.

If you have a solid internet connection, I really recommend Shadow. For the price of an eGPU enclosure and card, you’ll get something like 4-5 years of the base subscription, at which point you would probably be buying a new GPU anyway.

You don’t have to go crazy with eGPU compatibility, bootcamp drivers, etc.

I believe most of the eGPU issues with AMD cards arise from the Error 12 issue in Windows Device Manager when both iGPU and eGPUs are being used. As long as your display(s) are connected via the eGPU that should avoid that particular problem

I might try Shadow, thanks! However, the eGPU would also be for video editing in MacOS.
