No, they didn't change - meaning they never go up unless I game Heroes of the Storm :) I couldn't check exactly because iStat Menus isn't working on El Capitan yet, but I never heard them and the computer never got hot - it felt exactly the same as before.
Have you tried checking whether smcfancontrol works in El Cap or not?

I have finally installed it on my iMac 5K (i5, M290X). I can happily say that the lag is gone.

Here's what I did:

I opened several safari tabs, Photoshop images, a reference app (PureRef) containing several large images, a PDF file, Evernote, Notability, Tweetbot, Fantastical 2, Wunderlist, Pages, App Store and Finder. I then tried Mission Control: it was perfectly smooth. No dropped frames, responsive, beautiful.

I activated quick look on a 5K image (this caused the 'zoom' animation to be choppy on Yosemite) - the animation was fluid, zoom vas fast and instant.

I opened an image heavy PDF that struggled a bit on Yosemite - this time it was really, really smooth.

Every other aspect is good too, apps load fast, swiping between desktops is fast and, honestly, the whole system somehow emanates with speed and confidence. I'm still almost expecting it to lag or be choppy, but I just can't get it to falter. Even the little things, like, opening Dictionary definitions seems faster.

And this is DP1!!

So, in conclusion: there is NO UI lag on iMac 5K i5/M290X on El Capitan. Everything is smooth and responsive. PDFs are immediate and enjoyable to read.

When developers start implementing Metal into their apps (can't wait for the next Adobe CC release) - it will be even more amazing. The iMac 5K now feels like the supercomputer it was meant to be. I couldn't be happier with it on El Capitan.

Damn, thanks. This makes me want an i7/m290x

I'm wondering how it works on the older Macs. I hope it makes a noticible improvement on my 2010 27" or does it need newer GPU's to work?

My late 2013 has a bit more UI lag than on Yosemite. Fresh install on secondary partition too. Seems kinda spotty. Works great for some, a bit of lag for others.

In the last 45 calendar days I've gone through (replacements) 3 iMac 5k's. Each had its own unique challenges. All of which have been identified in this discussion. it's interesting how apple support deals with these issues. here's the set up for my iMac. (Yosemite 10.10.4)

iMac 5K (late 2014 configuration: 2015 build)
  • 4.0GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
  • 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    • upgrade to 32GB from OWC.
  • 512GB Flash Storage
  • AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5
  • LG WH16NS40: USB 3.0 (BluRay R/W);
  • WD MyBook for MAC: USB 3.0 (External HD 3TB);
  • Audio-engine 2+: USB 3.0;
  • ASUS PB278Q - true 8bit color (2x) /display port;
  • Logitech Performance MX mouse;
  • Kinesis Freestyle 2 for Mac keyboard;
  • Rode Microphone Podcaster w/desk stand;
  • Fujitsu Scansnap S1500M scanner;
  • Anker 3.0 USB Hub;
    • AH121 USB 3.0 7-Port Hub with 36W Power Adapter
    • 12V 3A High-Capacity Power Supply and VIA VL812 Chipset

      Can anyone tell me why I still have Mission Control lag, a Fan that's constantly running high to low and back again, and micro stutters?

      Apple support positions have been Pram reset, SMC reset, clean install, unplug all peripherals, etc. I've done this with them 3x and the result has always been iMac DOA and replace. What's up with that?

I don't see anything on this thread explaining the need to return. What could possibly make you need 3 returns? I do know the m295x may have some heat issues but I think El Captain will resolve many of the issues.

don't have access to "el captain". it was apple support that created the return due to time that the product was in possession and use, before the challenges were discovered.

I agree with the previous poster, I don't see any reason for return. If you want to that's your right, but the fact all three have been the same tells you there wasn't a fault as such, they all operate the same as everyone else's. If you can't live with it then I guess this particular iMac is not for you and suggest you return for a full refund and hope any other future iMac does not have the same issues or a completely different set of perceived problems.

Can anyone tell me why I still have Mission Control lag.

It's a known issue with Yosemite and has been seen across lots of different models. The recent updates have helped somewhat but you might end up having to wait for El Cap.

a Fan that's constantly running high to low and back again

It's supposed to do that, increasing in speed as you stress and therefore heat the machine, slowing down when it cools. If you prefer it on full speed all the time (I don't) you can get third party apps to do this.

and micro stutters?

I have seen this complaint from other people before but it's not something I see on my 5k M295X iMac. Probably something you will have to wait until El Cap to hopefully fix.

Can anyone with a retina 15" Macbook pro mid 2012 with 8 gb RAM , report in how UI behaves? Is there any lag while resizing / moving windows, using spaces, mission control etc?

I skipped Yosemite because of reports for UI lag.

Also how is El Capitan in terms of memory management? Better than Yosemite? 8 gb for a moderate user good to go (ie no swapping etc)?

On my base 15" mbp 2013 there is no lag on el capitan but besides osx i think the hd4000 is too slow for those pixels and i think is a diff between iris pro and hd 4000

cant i simply run with the gpu (650M) and thus avoid UI lag? Can someone with a mid 2012 retina macbook pro 15" give us his impressions in regards to UI lag while using hd 4000 only?

Everything on my 2012 rMBP is smooth whilst on the integrated graphics, but I also thought Yosemite was smooth too.

Thats good to hear. No offense but hopefully you are not one of those guys (nothing wrong with them btw) that dont notice laggy UI right? Just asking because "smooth" for some people is not smooth for others. Are you talking 60 frames per second smooth?

Thanks,and sorry if I sound like a jerk, i really dont mean to, I am just really sensitive with UI lag.

PS: Btw, is metal supported for 2012 rmbp and its HD4000 intergrated gpu? Or is it supported just via the 650M gpu?

I notice UI lag but I think I'm slightly less sensitive than other people. When swiping between spaces and playing with Mission Control I can't tell any difference between the integrated and the discrete graphics chips on this laptop - both look perfectly smooth.

One thing that does lag on the integrated graphics is the opening animation on large Dock stacks, which was a problem on Yosemite too. I can't really think of anything else though. Scrolling in Safari and other apps, etc, is all buttery smooth.
