I have the same problem :( I have had to re-add all my accounts manually and I now have 1000's of emails :( I haven't worked out how to get my 'on my mac' and VIP folders back, nor my contacts. It's been a nightmare. I have read it can be done with Time Machine, but I am not sure how.

Try deleting your mail accounts , one at a time, and reconfiguring each one again. Deleting accounts will not erase emails from your ISP's server. However, when you reinstall your account you will drop every email back onto your computer. Have fun deleting old emails that you have already read.

many thanks and yes had already decided that this was going to be the only way. Just got 37,472 emails now to sort through. This did not however bring back the on my mac subfolders so have had to create these again and then manually transfer the emails back into them. Cheers to the world of apple for supposedly making life easier.

This problem happens for all kind of reasons. Next time be sure to clear your ISP server of old emails before deleting and reinstalling your account. You can also set up Apple Mail to clear old mail from your ISP server every month which stops your ISP's server from filling up and crashing your account ---which is probably what happened.

I had a similar issue. My exchange stopped working mostly. I was receiving emails but when I tried to reply it would only let me reply with my personal gmail and wouldn't let me use my work exchange email.

I removed exchange and added it back in and that has seemed to fix it for me.
