Elgato today announced the latest product in its Eve series of HomeKit-connected devices, debuting the Eve Degree. Eve Degree is a HomeKit-compatible temperature and humidity monitor with a fresh design featuring a large display housed in a sleek aluminum body.

Elgato already makes a temperature and humidity monitor, the Eve Weather, but the new Eve Degree features an entirely different design and a visible temperature display for instant feedback with no need to check the Eve app to get a reading.

While the display means a quick temperature or humidity check doesn't require opening the accompanying Eve app, the app does store additional information, including climate data over time presented through graphs.

Eve Degree works indoors or outdoors thanks to a splash proof IPX3 water resistance rating, and it includes a replaceable battery that will allow it to function for several months at a time without needing to be recharged.

"Eve Degree is a luxurious and classy thermometer but, more importantly, it is seamlessly integrated into iPhone," says Florian Albrecht, Director User Experience, Elgato. "By leveraging the strengths of HomeKit and the Eve app, Eve Degree offers reliable usability, superior privacy, and advanced security.
With HomeKit support, temperature readings from the Eve Degree show up in the dedicated Home app, and it can answer to Siri queries and interface with other HomeKit-compatible products. With an Apple TV Home hub, Eve Degree is able to serve as a trigger for scenes, doing things like turning on a fan when the humidity gets too high, or turning on a humidifier when it's dry.

Eve Degree will be available from the Elgato website starting Tuesday, June 6 for $69.95.

Why would I buy this? My ecobee does all this and way more. A 69$ thermometer, really?

While I agree that this is a bit expensive, the ecobee has to sit in one place and they charge $80 for two sensors that do not give you a visual read out of the temp in the room unless you pull up the app. So if you want to be able to see the temp in a room that is not near your thermostat, this is a nice solution.

The Ecobee sensors have crap range. I have one that constantly disconnects and reconnects and it's line of sight about 17 feet away from the thermostat in my living room where it will sometimes get hot from my large floor to ceiling windows. And forget trying to put them downstairs at any distance except right under the thermostat, and even so it will constantly give you disconnect/reconnect issues. My house is only a few years old and the walls are just studs with 5/8" sheetrock, so it's not because it's an old house with thick walls or anything.

I was a fan of the Ecobee at first, but these annoying sensors have really made me not like the product. If these Elgato sensors have better range, I might consider trying to rig up some sort of HomeKit trigger system to control the thermostat. I had a Nest at my old house, and while I detest Google and what they've become, at least it generally worked better, even without the extra sensors. The software was a lot more straightforward too. I really feel like that one, great HomeKit company just hasn't been realized yet. I wish I had the capability to start a company building these things because I'm a passionate about interface design and feel like I could massively improve upon these existing systems. I don't know why Apple hasn't created their own HomeKit line as these products are ripe for usability improvement, but perhaps they're not wanting to kill third party support right out of the gate?

Also, as a weather geek, I'm still waiting for Netatmo to update their weather station to support HomeKit. They've been introducing other new products that support it, so I hope they'll hurry up and add support as I've been waiting for a long time. I want to be able to add all of the wireless accessories such as the rain gauge and wind sensors. I'd like to set up a trigger that if it hasn't rained X amount in X number of days, turn on the sprinklers in the evening (there are some HomeKit sprinklers I recently saw, can't remember what they were called). Or if the wind goes over a certain speed, it could warn me that a storm is coming in if the garage door is open or the windows are open. There are so many triggers that I'd love to combine together!

anybody actually been able to place an order? I just get "There are no shipping methods available for your address. Please verify that your address is correct. If you continue to have problems, please contact us directly." No matter which (correct!) address I use.

Sure, I wish these were cheaper, but being able to see temps indoors and outdoors WITHOUT opening another app is worth it for me.

Mobility. That's why. You can put it anywhere versus using the standalone application. I could easily see this being a convenience when in a room where someone spend more time away from their thermostat or not having your iPhone tethered. And this affordable and it's water resistant.

If you're using this outdoors (as the product is also rated for that), wouldn't the Eve Weather be a better choice? It's $20 cheaper and doesn't include a built-in display, but if it's outside that's probably not useful, anyway. It does have some bad reviews (many about limited range) and I wish it worked with SmartThings, but if I were really using this outside that's probably what I'd do.

Does this enable your Smart Thermostat to get readings from another location(s)?

Or are there Smart Thermostats that have additional sensor add-ons?

This to me is one of the big perks of a Smart Thermostat...I want it to be able to get aggregated readings from different rooms in the house, to inform its control over the AC.

You're describing exactly what the Ecobee thermostat does. It includes a few remote sensors and you can add additional ones as well. Depending on schedule and settings, you can set it to take an averaged reading from multiple sensors. Common example - when sleeping only use readings from sensors in the bedrooms.

Thanks I will look into that one!

I think I will purchase this to place in a wine fridge to track temp/humidity over time.

Any other items that would fit what I would like to do?

I'd never buy another Elgato product - terrible customer service. An old TV dongle I had (which I'd bought new) needed new software reinstallation at some point, can't remember why, crash or OS update. The thing was several years old but still worked for a few channels, which was sufficient. I needed a registration number, of course I no longer had the box. They refused to provide me with a new one, despite there being zero commercial value in doing so! It was ridiculous, the dongle was so old I don't imagine I could have even acquired it second hand if I'd tried. They were just being really, really petty. I really couldn't believe it. I put it down to the German mindset versus the customer-is-always-right ideology we've come to expect from US companies.

Yes. But there are people who have no need for ecobee, like outside of US where we don't have central heating/cooling in the same way you have. We have central heating with radiators spread around the house and under the floor, these are controlled by valves on each device. You can check Elgato Eve Thermo to see what I mean. And for those people having a separate thermostat in a room might make sense.
As with all home automation things, just because you don't see a use for it doesn't mean someone won't :)

What are you talking about? I never said anything about not seeing a use for it. I was merely describing an option that is available as to what TurboPGT was describing.

You are absolutely right, I meant to quote shm600cbr or whatever is nickname is and mistook his post with yours.

Apologies sir.
