Have many old VHS tapes that I had been converting to digital using the Elgato video capture lead and iMovie. Haven't used it for a couple of years, tried to start using it again but the Mac no longer recognises the cable. Wondering if this could be an incompatibility with high Sierra?

Are you trying to use iMovie to import it? Could be an iMovie thing. Try using Quicktime's New Movie Recording function in the File Menu.
Thanks for the tip Dave, will try it but it seems that the capture cable is not recognised at all. When I open the Elgato programme it asks for the cable to be connected via USB, which i do, then it doesn't go any further.

You may want to try re-installing the Elgato app. It may do something to make Sierra happy.

The support page says: To check for updates and install the latest version, first launch Elgato Video Capture and then select "Check for Updates" from the menu. The software update will install automatically.
