Elgato's ThunderBolt Dock

Anyone use a thunderbolt Dock like the Elgato's or Belkin need to add some usb 3.0 ports to run some usb3.0 external hard drives.
Hows the speed using a thunderbolt dock i know i won't get full usb speeds but will it be faster then firewire 800.
 
I have a CalDigit TB dock, the first gen. With external HD's the USB 3 ports are just as fast as the built in ones.
