See Ellen announce the news herself on her show:

http://www.tmz.com/2009/09/09/ellen-im-the-new-judge-on-american-idol/

Fox has confirmed the news via a press release.

"Fox has announced that Ellen DeGeneres will be the new fourth judge on the show. She’ll start work on “Idol” after a parade of temporary fill-ins (including Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain) winds down during the audition rounds.

“I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol,” DeGeneres said in a Fox press release. “I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.”

Meanwhile, fans of Ellen’s daytime talk show have nothing to fear. She said during a taping for tomorrow’s episode that she’ll stick around, taking on both a day and night job.

Of her role as judge, Ellen said, “Hopefully I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you. I sit at home and I watch it and I don’t have that technical…I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person.”

Yeah she will be funny but TCD I do see your point. However with 3 others in the industry I think it'll be ok.

According to Fox, Ellen is supposed to represent what the viewer at home thinks.

Simon is the music industry executive judge. Kara is the songwriter judge. Randy is the the business manager/record producer judge. Ellen is the music lover/people’s voice judge.

This is American "Idol", people. It's an entertainment show. Don't take it so seriously.

Hmmm... It's all starting to make sense now. She did a one night guest judging appearance this summer on "So You Think You Can Dance" Simon and Nigel are friends and I believe business associates. While she did say some funny things, it got old real quick. Everything was like, "well, I'm no judge, but..." or "I don't know anything about dancing, but..." I like Ellen, but in that context I was disappointed. Maybe she'll be better on Idol.

Though I don't watch American Idol. I don't see a valid reason for adding Ellen.

I have never found her funny and would think this would ultimately drag the show down further. If the wanted someone funny they should have gone with Bill Ingvall, Ron White, Larry the Cable Guy, Sinbad, Adam Ferrara, Jerry Seinfeld, etc...

I don't even see how she ever became famous. She is not funny, is not attractive, does not sing and is a deplorable actress. But that is all my opinion. People do like the WB or whatever that channels call letters are now.

No, just high on weed. :p

Darn. Potheads are usually boring.

Those are all dudes. Ellen is a dudette.

While I only watch the first few freak shows, I think she'll make a great judge. She's funny. It's not like they hired her to attract gay viewers, clearly Ryan Seacrest has that covered.:D

I don't understand everyone saying she's not qualified since she's not in the music biz. They've obviously never seen her dance, let alone straddle a coffee table.
