You miss the point - they DELIBERTLY made it so that a good, old bit still good email client can not be used. I am one of the developers of Classila and yes, we are working on trying to get it to work with modern web.
I doubt they targeting Entourage specifically. If it is indeed a certs/encryption issue, then that means they just upgraded their security to make it safer for everyone. Again, I don't see it reasonable to expect Google, or anyone for that matter, to support outdated software indefinitely. Also, if you want to use Entourage X, the solution of not using Google was proposed earlier ;)

Oh, kudos! Classilla is a little miracle making os9 stand against the giants.
I'm also upset that the juggernaut of "progress" is smashing the old soft&hardware...
On the other hand elevating security on the provider's side or updating certificates unfortunately requires adaption on the other side.
I wonder, if any personal mail server could be the device in the middle.
For a lot of Cloud-stuff the combination of mobile-device and old hardware is my way to get around the shortcomings of the old hardware.

Go figure - why does Tiger mail app work ??? Classila mail app does work as I do several things in OS 9, writing and resume writing is good for that. I tried thunderbird and it works great, Gnumail too works. I can you Entourage for other things.. though I did look at other providers for email
And there are plenty of them, those that care and support those on older hardware.

Let’s get one thing straight - I have a mix of Intel and PPC Macs, of which one isn’t being used - the G5 Quad due to it being an energy hog / trying to keep my gas and electric bill low.

For my job I use a 2012 MacBook Pro, also have a 2015 15 inch with dual graphics. I just have a warm heart to my Pismo and I just got an Msata m2 Samsung 128GB for it - this will speed up TenFourFox and 9 applications.

Yes I like old stuff because it simply works. Apple of the past was a nice Apple at least to my needs, until Jobs died. But that’s another story.

Não é impossível - apenas lento, dependendo de suas necessidades e expectativas.

Ok, nothing is impossible, but understand the point that the personal computer was created to make our life easier, making it more practical. A powerpc is a rube goldberg machine, you need to do 1001 hacks and tricks to accomplish a simple goal, due to the platform being dead ...

I use my old macs just for nostalgia, and old games ...

Agreed !!!

Well Tiger was last updated with a major update in 2009, two years newer than the most recent Entourage update. I also love PPC. I have multiple PPC Macs in near-daily and I'm typing one one now. I too love doing as much as possible on these older machines, but for anything that involves the potential transfer of personal info (email, online banking, etc.) I am content to use my MacBook and maintain compatibility with modern security protocols and certificates and encryption algorithms. I totally get where you're coming from and, in a perfect world, I would love to be able to use only my PPC machines. Sadly that isn't possible though.

That's pretty cool that you're a dev on Classilla, I look forward to the next update ;)

Nope. No 1001 hacks and tricks ...
Install Tiger or Leopard & Updates.
Get TenFourFox, Webkit4Leopard and some other approved Apps.
Make a few adjustments by reducing eye-candy with Onyx etc.
Add a mobile device for streaming stuff (Netflix etc.) and Cloud.
That makes a capable combination of mobile device and workstation which is able to cope with the majority of tasks.
(Unless You are David Cameron and want your next Avatar Movie rendered on that devices ...)
Definitely still far from a rube goldberg machine ...
(but I'm going to have fun with them machines ...) :D

Ah, the feeling of déjà vu.

I won't reignite that particular debate because it became so counter-productive: instead, I'll respectfully disagree with your assessment. @bobesch has summed up most of what I would've expressed anyway. :)

I'd say that it's not a Rube Goldberg machine ever, but especially when you use it for what it's intended to do. The majority of these machines came out before the era of internet video streaming, HD video, and other modern niceties. The fact that we can do these things on these Macs is amazing, but also not what they were initially designed to do and it definitely doesn't require any more effort than installing any other OS and setting it up for your specific workflow and usage. Most of the time it's just installing an app and maybe applying some settings. ;)

Like @TheShortTimer , I'm not trying to reignite a debate, just respectfully disagreeing. @bobesch sums it up quite nicely, I agree. :)

I don't want to start a discussion, but I have my ibook g4 1.2ghz right now here, with 1.25gb of ram, connected via rj45, 10.4.11, all updated, tenfourfox downloaded today, and he can barely open the macrumors forum page ...

I believe that this would also occur in a 2.8ghz pentium 4. Powerpc is well outdated, and the processor itself was designed to work in a way not very favorable to applications aimed at the internet.

I consider it a ruble machine, the simple fact that I need to use my cell phone to do something on a computer (something that I would easily do simply using the cell phone, or an ordinary computer)

@Rikintosh Have you tried the browser tweaks produced by @eyoungren and @z970mp? They're a necessity and are listed in the sticky threads on the main page of this forum for that very reason. :)

I can access this forum on my iBook G3 - a machine with far less hardware resources than your iBook G4.

The difference between these two statements is likely down to a couple of reasons; and @TheShortTimer knows what those are, which is why he is getting the result he is.

1. uMatrix/Noscript. Plainly put, if you're going to browse the web without the ability to shut off javascript and analytics - then slow loading, SBBOD and heavy CPU loads are what will happen. Hell, I have an MBP and a MP and I STILL use uMatrix!

2. Like every other website, MacRumors uses javascript. uMatrix and NoScript makes it quite clear just how heavy the site is with JS. A good part of that is the Rich Text Editor! Shut it off. Make that settings cog in the post entry box turn red. If you leave it on, all the JS that allows for rich text editing kicks in. It's running in the background even when you aren't using it. Learn to use tags.

Let JS run rampant without trying to box it in and you'll continue to have a miserable online experience.

I loved the PPC machines, but in 2020? I think I'll dig out a PowerBook and boot up some Panther or even Jaguar for the memories.
I was thinking just now that our area of the forum is starting to see an influx of PowerPC users who simply want to use older software and OS for a short time. Then you posted. :D

2020 is very doable for PowerPC Macs though. It just comes down to how much effort you want to put in to it. However, taking it out for a short trip down memory lane is about all the effort a lot of people want to give.

That's fine, just don't discount the rest of us who've been making it work for us as daily drivers.

I actually don't bother with any of those. Just using a custom hosts file to block ads, 3rd party cookies, etc is more than enough to browse comfortably on a G4. Adding those add-ons mentioned above with a hosts file wont hurt anything though, and will probably speed things up a bit more. However those add-ons will affect browser start up time, use extra precious memory, and require time to set up on a site by site basis. This simple solution is one and done.

Hosts file i use found here: https://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

Video of my mac mini g4 using a newer (FF60.9-68.9) and heavier browser than tenfourfox with only a hosts file to block ads, and only 1 browser add-on (grease monkey for youtube).

Cheers

I tried to access my bank account using TenFourFox and the experience was nice. This was on a G4 Pismo.

I agree for the most part, but the only reason I leave it on is the autosave feature. Many a time have I pressed the wrong key and went back or forward a page by accident, or mistakenly linked to somewhere else, which all would have then been presumably lost if not for the rich text editor being enabled.

It's saved my behind many times from having to write out the same thing twice. That said, I in no way speak for anyone else but myself, but to me, autosave alone is worth the performance hit.

Totally get that. Like a lot of things around here, I think it comes down to how you work. I tend to post first and edit afterwards

I also figure that if I leave the page before I post, then I probably shouldn't have posted anyway. In some cases, where I do accidentally close a page before completing my post, as incredibly frustrating as that is, it also often forces me to be more concise. "There are fields, Neo, endless fields where drafts are no longer stored...they are abandoned."

The other side is that I come back into a thread after having abandoned a potential post to find…it's been saved. And it respawns every time I visit the thread. Getting rid of it means having to turn the editor back on, delete the draft and then turn it back off.

So autosave is not dependent on the rich text editor? If you've got it off all the time, then it must be a deeper part of the forum software if it's still working for you.

Then again, maybe that one little element of the RTE is kept on while all others are turned off... A good way to test this would be to use an Android 4.4 UA, in which there is no RTE, and the reply field is just a simple box. I wonder if it's still present there...

After careful thought, I am possibly retiring the Pismo. It’s caused me a lot of anguish, depression plus covid 19 is adding to this. I love my PPC machines, but I think the Pismo is not worth the time and I just ordered a few days ago a PATA green board to support a long msata M2 128GB long card. A waste of 50 dollars as this would have been for the Pismo. While it would increase performance of my machine with TenFourFox on tiger, still with the shock that really nothing works anymore in OS 9, the OS I only knew back in 2000-2001, my decision to retire it is becoming a reality.

On top of whuch I ordered the following from eBay- Office 2001 with product key, Office v.X, the original soundjam MP plus - all total with everything 150.00 all for nostalgia :-( plus hospitalization for severe depression.
