eMac System Profiler reports no serial number

While helping somebody with their eMac I discovered that System Profiler lists the Serial Number as "-", i.e., just a dash.

What causes that?

When the Logic Board is replaced I believe.

Thanks! It's not a serious problem, but it's a little awkward when you want to identify it without having to hunt for a serial number on the case.

Isn't the serial number on the plastic flap covering the optical drive as well as System Profiler?

...And if you replace your HDD. It happened to me when I changed the HDD on my MacBook Pro. Changed the stock to 500GB, now I don't have a serial number within OS X.

There is an Application that Apple released which allows you to list your serial number back into the MLB info again.

I've seen the missing serial numbers on PowerPC iMacs that have had to have their hard drives replaced too.
