email attachments not opening

My daughter has a Mac and when she emails me or her teachers word documents(2011) they wont open. I get the paper clip icon in my inbox but there doesn't seem to be a document to open? Tried R) click and save but no word doc there.
Help!
 
On her Mac have her open Mail.app and in Mails menu items Mail, Attachments and select 'Always Send Windows Friendly Attachments' to put a check mark on jot and then have her send the attachment again!
