Email problems

New to the Mac world and having a peculiar problem.
Have Mac Book Pro running OSX 10.5.7
I tried to sync up my Yahoo mail account with Mac but I'm having trouble doing it. Gmail is fine, Yahoo ain't.
I've resolved myself to this but once in a blue moon I like to try again. This time I am not able to delete the Yahoo mailbox and it's holding up my Gmail mail. It shows that the message is sending and stays that way.
What did I do wrong!!!

Yahoo does NOT offer free pop/imap connection like GMAIL. You have to pay for it with Yahoo! Mail Plus. They even have a email server setup page.

That is understood.
I'm saying that since the last time I "tried" to sync Yahoo, I tried to delete the Yahoo mailbox and it won't delete.
Also, since that Gmail won't send anything out.
