I used to hate the idea of online mail storage, I *always* used a pop client like Eudora. During Katrina when I didn't always have a reliable ISP email, I went to Gmail, thinking it would just be temporary, but I've really used it ever since for my primary email, and I can save whatever messages I want.

Most spam gets sent directly to the spam folder - I might get 4 or 5 spams in my inbox per week, which isn't bad at all.

I still have my ISP email (not used much anymore, surprisingly), and I use Thunderbird for that.

I've got two gmail accounts (via imap) as well as my exchange server account all setup through Apple Mail.

I use the new google sync in address book for my contacts (as of 10.5.3), and ical with spanning sync to synchronize ical with google. Now with everything I need synchronized between my mac and google, I couldn't be happier.

Hotmail

How? If I may ask?! Do you have a premium Hotmail account or a standard? Because as far as I know there's no way of forwarding mail from Hotmail's free service.

Old legacy hotmail accounts had that feature, and if you never turned it off, emails would continue to forward even though the option is now removed.

Microsoft Entourage. Gets my hotmail just fine.

Plus, it connects to my employer's Microsoft Exchange server as well.

Somewhat of an ugly interface (anyone know how to change the purple-ish interface to something else?), but nothing else consolidates all of my email to one application.

I wish they just cloned the Outlook interface & navigation. It was simple, yet effective.

For e-mail client I use Mail.

For e-mail service I use Gmail and .mac. I'm now moving from gmail because I plan to fully utilize mobile me features so I have set up a forwarding from gmail to .mac. And I need 2 computers and an iPod touch to be in sync.

Just recently switched from Hotmail to Gmail.

For one, Hotmail sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't open in Safari. I love safari and don't feel like having to run 2 seperate browsers just to check email. I can now use mail.app (finally) or use safari however I please.

The online storage is nice for school and work documents and is growing everyday. It's at about 6800 MB right now, and increasing at about 3MB per day.

Also, since you can use any email address with an MSN Live account, I can use my Gmail address with MSN. (but I use adium of course).

iPhoto to Picasa web albums is also available (simple plugin for iPhoto) and the photos can be accessed through your Gmail inbox.

TL;DR version...Gmail has way more useful features over Hotmail and is more integrated into your mac. And it's free. :)

Do what I do. I wanted the @mac.com email address with the interface of Gmail.

1. Tell .Mac Mail to forward all email to your gmail address and to not keep a copy in your .Mac mailbox.

2. Add your @mac.com email address into your alias list in Gmail so that you can send email out identified as coming from your .Mac email address.

3. Select Default next to your @mac.com email address in Gmail so that by default, all emails sent will show as coming from @mac.com.

Done and done. That's how I've done it and I'm very happy with the results plus if I ever change email address' I can do the same thing, give everyone the new email while I continue to access the very same mail system with all mail already stored the way I do it.

Haha I actually do the opposite to you!

I wanted to change my e-mail addresses from my ISP (British Telecom) as when I move out of my parents' house one day I won't stick with them so I needed something free and timeless: Gmail!
If you want folders on IMAP though it doesn't work so nicely in Mail.app as you also get the default ones (drafts, sent-mail) that have their weird lower case names and hyphens and stuff so I have my Gmail account forward everything onto a new BT e-mail which is POP3 so I can have folders on my Mac easily whilst still having web access through Gmail to everything if I want it.

When I do finally get away from BT, all it takes is to redirect the forwarding in Gmail to a new address and that's it!
