Emailed pics larger than actual size!

I have a couple of pictures I enclose in emails regularly in outlook 2011. I go to send emails and they show up as just under 24,000 kb (24mb). Why?

The pictures are only 1 mb and 4.5mb; totalling 5.5mb, with a tiny few bytes for text.
Why is this???😕

For those that may need future help with this:

It was because I was actually enclosing the picture into the document via outlook 2011. If I attached them to the email then the pics were as original size.🙂
