Emailing photos with iPhoto?

When I send photos with iPhoto, the pictures arrive to the receivers the same size, regardless of which size I select to be sent. In the bottom right corner of iPhoto, the options exist to select from small to large, or optimize.....but the pictures always show up the same size....am I missing something? 😕
