Emails don't group together

Have a look at the photo.

If I log in to my Gmail account using the Gmail app there is one thread with (48) next to it showing the number of conversations. But in the native iOS mail app they are all listed separately. I have the grouping option switched on in the settings. I have tried deleting my email and iCloud accounts and then setting up again. Nothing works.
What can I do to fix it as I don't like the Gmail app??

Then your only two options are to use the Gmail app (as suggested) or live with it as-is. There are no other options to force grouping other than the one you say you've already tried.

Are both of you using the same address throughout the conversation? Any replies sent from aliases or the like on either side?
