my mac mail app opens as usual. my emails download. yet when i open an email to read it it takes several minutes for the body of the email to open. I have tried all suggestions--safe start, rebuild mailbox, deleted and readied email addresses. etc. Apple has looked at it three times, have taken it in to Apple and nothing has helped. The general consensus is that there is a flaw in the Mail App.
Anybody else have this. I have tried everything. Help!

Which macOS version are you using and on what machine? Apple told you there's a flaw in the Mail app?

I have an iMac less than 4 years old (Retina 4k )and am running OS Monterey 12.5.1 When Apple could not find the cause of this they said there was probably a glitch in the Mail App.

I've seen it recently too. Perhaps for the last month but I'm not sure about that.
I'm running Monterey 12.5.1 on a 2017 27" iMac, 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, 4 TB SSD

had a complete diagnostic done on my computer and nothing showed up so i am assuming it is a mail app problem that Apple is not about to fix.

Take the gmail accounts offline.
Then restart Mail (leaving the gmail accounts offline for now).
Any difference?

I have tried everything. Apple has tried everything. Apple has had control of my computer three times when I have contacted them. I have taken my computer into Apple. I have tried everything that has been suggested here. Apple has tried everything. The only conclusion they have come to is that there is a glitch in the Mail App.
All the standard remedies have been tried--safe start. deleting and re-adding emails, there are no extensions no previews to disable views have been checked. Apple has done everything--including f*****king up my emails to the point that they don't know what they did and don't know how they got them back. So go figure. Maybe it is time to ditch Apple and go elsewhere with a new computer.

Have you tried a different email client? Outlook? Spark? etc....?

I'm not a fan of the alternatives I've tried, but something might work for you.

Meanwhile, in my case, its that Mac Mail takes a l-o-n-g time to open at all. Tried all the usual 'fixes' with no solution. Didn't used to be the case.

It seems that Apple has speeded this up under Ventura (MacOS 13.0) on my machine. What's your experience?

It seems that the problem was that my desktop (2017) had an Intel processor and all the current updates were based on the new Silicon processor. This interfered with a lot of the apps i was running and esp. Mail. I took my iMac to an Apple specialist and that was his verdict even tho Apple could not fix the problem after trying three times. Apple does not seem to want to admit that problems exist. The end result was that I had an external hard drive installed and now my machine runs like a brand new machine--fast and instant downloading of apps. I can read my emails as they now open in an instant. I have not yet updated to Ventura.
