Hi my hardrive seems too be filling up any program that can tell me exactly what is taking up so much space? also i think i need to archive emails how can i do this

Take a look at OmniDiskSweeper. It will give you a graphical layout of space used.

Says I need 10.8 to run this. Did a software update check and it told me I had 10.6.8 and that it was the most up to date ….

Try Daisy Disk 2.1.2 at the bottom of this page. Similar to Omni.
