wait until you find out about the miracle of insulation

Wowwwww I've never heard of that before ?

Of course, insulation does not keep things at the proper temperature. If I get a latte from Starbucks, for example, it's about 180º. That's far too hot to drink. If I put it in a well-insulated mug, I'll just have a far-too-hot beverage for hours. I don't want that. I want a drink that's a perfect (for me) 135º for as long as it takes me to drink it.

Don't think that's worth spending the money? Then don't. But don't make stupid, snarky comments when you don't have one and have no idea what you're talking about. As you can see from the dozens of comments in this thread, everyone who actually has one absolutely loves it.

If you take so long to drink coffee that it gets cold then you are brewing too much. Make less. Reheating coffee influences the flavor.

How does this track caffeine intake? Does it measure how much caffeine is in the drink?

Reheating coffee does influence flavor, but this isn't reheating coffee. It doesn't allow the coffee to get cold in the first place.

After reading a few comments here, I just reached out to Ember, and they're sending a replacement free of charge! They said the same to me about improving their processes.

Excellent support, and I will continue to recommend this product line :)

Yeah, their customer service is really excellent. I've gotten my original white mug replaced at least twice, and they sent me an extra charging coaster for free even though I offered to pay for it.

I got one of these last year during Black Friday and I hate how much I love my ember cup for all the reasons previously mentioned.

It’s great coming back to my coffee if I’ve been busy away from my desk and it’s still at the perfect temp. :)

Also it was quite hilarious last week when I got a push notification that there was a firmware update for my cup 🤣

Just use a double wall travel cup with lid.... keeps hot longer than it takes to drink it. "Why is my coffee cold? Oh, the app crashed."

This is a great reminder:
Everytime you have an idea and you think to yourself "This is so stupid. No one will buy or use this.", look at stuff like the Ember coffe cup and you'll realize: There is always someone somewhere who will buy it, so donˋt give up on your stupid ideas. ?

you sound like the kind of person to tell everyone you're vegan lmao

Come on stop

They think people just stare at the coffee for an hour instead of drinking it in 10 minutes.

Here is a science factoid for coffee drinkers.

It takes about 30-40 minutes for the caffeine to pass the blood brain barrier and give you that ‘pick up’ feeling.

But only if you drink it quick enough.

If you sip it for a long time there will be no ’pick up’ feeling because the caffeine is trickling into your system too slowly and wearing off at the same time. Just placebo effect. Waste of money even.

You must drink your coffee within 5-10 minutes. Then you get the real deal full blunt force trauma caffeine hit.

Knowing the expected temperature of a hot drink at arms length I haven’t touched for a few minutes is a skill that’s taken years to acquire - this mug would destroy it in an instant.

I have to second the great customer service from Ember. I had issues with both the flaking coating on the original mug and charging pins being stuck, but their customer service was always quick to replace it. By the 3rd mug, they had worked out the coating issues, and both of my original charging saucers were replaced. Since the last replacement in 2018, I haven't had any further issues.

I'm not sure how useful a smaller one would be though...for me personally anyway.

It's kind of funny - this discussion reminds me of years ago when mp3 players were popular. I couldn't understand why anyone would pay the "insane" price for an iPod when you could get a $40 generic one that would "do the same thing".?‍♂️

One consideration with coffee is, if not sealed from air (oxygen), it goes bad in about a half hour whether hot or cold. If you enjoy and paid good money for fine coffee, drink up.
I hate to be a well-actually person, but as an avid and proud coffee snob, this isn't entirely correct! The reason coffee seems to go bad in just a half hour is because it comes closer to room temperature, and flavors are more sweet/bitter/umami at those temperatures.

IIRC, it's about the 2-4 hour mark (depending on type coffee, type of brew, etc) that the oils change enough from air exposure enough to affect overall taste.

Got one as a gift, used it just once.
Think it was dumped last time I made a major cleaning, guess I didn't need it.

AAPL should buy this company and make the next iPhone warm up a regular cup.
It would be the best iPhone feature since, well, the iPhone itself.

I love my Ember mug, and use it almost daily but I wish the battery life was better.

This reminds me of coozies. Who takes so long to drink something it drops to near ambient temperature.
What about all the cool kids that drink iced coffee? Seems like a huge market opportunity if they pivot quickly. Paging David Sacks to sponsor a new round.

I’ve never understood these self-heating mug concept, mainly because when I have a cup of hot coffee or tea, I don’t wait for it to cool down and try to drink it as quickly as I can while it’s hot - even when I use a thermal mug. This idea of using electricity to keep a mug of coffee / tea warm for an hour, for a beverage with limited value, seems wasteful to me. Either drink your dang drink while its hot, or make a smaller cup to begin with so that you’re not nursing something that should be consumed much more quickly.

I actually received two of these as corporate swag a couple years ago, and they were fun. I gave up on them because I got tired of hand washing, and my very decent Yeti mug can be put right in the dishwasher. I'm sure Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave because I chose function over form, but, tossing a Yeti in the dishwasher doesn't kick off another time-task vs. hand washing <shrug>.
