Just set up my 6s as new on latest firmware. Whilst typing a message I used to get the appropriate emoji pop up in the predictive text box. Now I only get the option to exchange emoji for words when I press the emoji button on the keyboard.

Any ideas how to get back predictive emojis as I'm typing? Thanks.

Be nice you give your solution just in case someone else has the issue

You need the emoji keyboard turned on for the suggestions to appear. I personally don't like the emoji keyboard so I set up custom word replacements so I can still make emojis without the emoji keyboard
