I have an Ext Drive ( Windows NT File system format ) and in the trash is a file that refuses to empty. The message is
The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in ' -------- ' cannot be read or written. ( Error code -36)

    I have tried
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/ but even that cant empty it. Any suggestions please.

try secure empty trash - hold command key while emptying to have that option available. has helped get rid of files for me before that don't want to empty.

The Mac OS can not write (it can read) to a NTFS formatted drive unless there is 3rd party software installed that enables writing to NTFS drives. The action of trying to delete a file requires writing to the external drive so there is the problem if it is in NTFS format.
