No, all the Jailbreak does, if you don't install apps, is to allow access to the root directory (very short and to the point description). A DFU restore to stock firmware fixes the phone. Also my process restores the phone to stock firmware anyway.

The only difference between a fresh iPhone and an iPhone after andyblila's process one line in a text file.

I just thought of a way people could get full Emoji without jailbreaking at all.

Someone will need to do this for it to work:

1. Erase all previous iTunes backups in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
2. DFU restore an iPhone to pwned firmware.
3. Set it up as a new phone in iTunes, name it something generic so people can change it later and so they don't have your info. Kill any sync it might try to do automatically.
4. Use Cydia to install the Emoji package
5. Use iTunes to backup the phone. Right click on it in the left column and hit Backup...
6. Locate the backup in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup and distribute it to people who want to use it.

Then someone who doesn't want to jailbreak could:

1. Erase all backups in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
2. Put the above created backup in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
3. Restore their phone from backup and choose at one
4. Resync all of their data if it was lost such as contacts and email accounts. TXT will probably be gone, I'm not sure.

But yeah, I've also read that the backups are signed so this may not work. We'll have to try it though, obviously.

Because that is more bothersome than jailbreaking. It's more work.

I opened the backup with an editor and it looked signed, but it might work anyway. The JB backup and un JB works perfectly and is the same result as not JB'ing in the first place. You have an un JB phone with the Emoji settings available! ;)

And a bunch of emoji on the phone, don't forget! That will be the biggest clue. They'll be wondering how they got on there...and so far, there is only one way.

On a different note, look at the screen shots of this app:

http://appshopper.com/social-networking/webmessenger

This app has emoticons that can be added to texts. Couldn't someone have just made an SMS app that included emoji to avoid all this? Can someone just do this now, for the rest of the world? It won't be duplicating a function, because the rest of the world functionally doesn't have emoji on their iPhones. :D (thanks Apple)

Cool. Will this work possibly?

You are not entirely correct. Once you do a full DFU restore and set it up as a new phone, there will be no Emoji on it. It will be a fresh phone :D, fresh as it was the day you bought it!

Yeah, I know. You just have to remember they're on there. ;)

Worked like a charm!

Hi Guys,

Ive been reading for a while through this site and a few others on getting the Emoji enabled on my :apple: iPhone 3G 2.2. I didnt want my iphone to be permanently Jailbroken so never done it.

Came across this below from andyblila and i have to say very well done. I went through this process in less than an hour and it worked flawlessly. My phone is back to its "original" ;) locked self with Emoji enabled.

Thought i would sign up as well and let you know

Well everyone, this is what I did and it worked.

1. I did the Jailbreak with Pwnage and installed Cydia.

2. I searched for the Emoji, installed it, and enabled it through settings/keyboard/Japanese and turn on Emoji.

3. I did a Backup of the phone.

4. DFU restore of the phone with the stock firmware.

5. Restored the phone from the backup.

Once I did this Cydia was gone as the phone is relocked back to stock and Emoji was still enabled!

In conclusion, I did have to momentarily Jailbreak the phone, but it is relocked and nobody knows the better. If you want Emoji, this is definitely the easiest way to get them. :D

Glad to help!

I think I may have done something wrong. After following video instructions I did the restore holding option and using the new ipsw file. But all I have is the pineapple on the screen. Nothing else is happening.

Any ideas?

Update:
It worked. I have Cydia on the phone but I can't make a phone call.

I followed the video instructions too and I was stuck on the Apple logo for a good few minutes before it went on. It was at least 5 times longer than in the video.

However, I can make a phone call.

After playing with Cydia for most of the night I've decided that it's mostly a waste of time. The only thing that has actually improved my phone is SBSettings and that's only because it allows me to turn on/off bluetooth without having to go through settings, etc. You just swipe your finger across the status bar and the menu pops up. Other than emoji being enabled that there really isn't anything but a crap load of winterboard themes that mostly make your phone look like a bad Windows theme.

Well I have emoji. :) But can't make a phone call or send a text. :(

Cydia looks cool and I would like to play with it some more but I really need to get my phone connection back.

If I go back to DFU mode, that should take me back to to setting before the jailbreak and phone should be working, am I thinking correctly?

Update:
I got my phone connection back but no emoji. <sigh> I must have missed a step somewhere. I will try again tonight after work.

I got the pineapple logo. The video did seem to go faster and I was getting very worried.

without jailbreaking (the v card install way) can everyone access ALL emoji icons? i can't seem to :s

if someone has done the Vcard way, could they check if they can get all the emoji? thanks a lot!

(see bottom of page to download touchdial app which is much more expensive but unlocks emoji)
http://iphoneappsupport.blogspot.com/2008/09/touch-dial.html

1 Download "frostyplace" from the App Store ($.99) or 59p for my uk comrades
2 Toy around with the app a bit.
3 Push the Home button, go into Settings
4 Click General > International > Keyboards > Japanese
5 Turn on Emoji
6 Head into a text message and click the globe symbol to the left of your spacebar.
7 Drive your iPhone friends nuts.

Last night, I jailbroke my phone (having previously vowed never to jailbreak), edited com.apple.Preferences.plist, backed up, then unjailbreak'd via a DFU restore.

I didn't like the vCard method, and I'm too tight to pay for an app (especially one that doesn't work with 2.2.1!). So I'm pretty happy with the method I used - jailbreaking really isn't me, but it was just a way of editting com.apple.Preferences.plist - my phone is not jailbroken anymore.

The only weird thing is that I used pledit.exe on Windows to edit com.apple.Preferences.plist. However, I couldn't add </true> as it wouldn't let me do it. I noticed all the other preferences where enabled via <integer>1</integer>, so I did that instead. Did anyone else notice this?
