There used to be a hack to enable Push for Gmail. It involved updating a plist in your iTunes backup with the serial of a iPhone you used to use with Gmail before they took that capability away. I tried it with my iPhone X but it seems that it doesn't work anymore with iOS 11. Any ideas?

If you have a gsuite account, you can set up your gmail as an exchange server and get real push.
Note: I believe this is true only if you pay for a gsuite account. I don't think it applies to old legacy Google Apps for your Domain accounts. I'd love to know I'm wrong, however. 🙂

I simply install the Gmail app and configure it to deliver the push notifications.

I prefer the built in mail app to the gmail one. I have my gmail account set to manual fetch in there.

So the alerts come through with the gmail app, but I read the message in the native mail app.

I’ve been doing this for quite a few years, and it works decent enough. No gsuite fee. Hope this helps you.

Not free, but Nuevasync will act as an Exchange-based go-between for GMail and the iOS email app. You give Nuevasync your GMail credentials and they’ll configure you an iOS-compatible Exchange server that will send/receive your GMail without the need to forward to a different email address.

Email push notifications are delayed by only a few seconds compared to the GMail app.

And it has the added benefit of working through my workplace’s firewall (POP and IMAP mail is blocked unless running through a VPN, but MS Exchange is permitted since that’s what our PC workstations use).

I’ve been using Nuevasync for several years now and it’s been virtually 100% reliable. Some people do not like giving their email credentials to a third-party service and that’s understandable. But I’ve been very happy with it. I think around $30 per year.

I have no financial relationship with them. Just a happy customer. www.nuevasync.com

I'm told the Outlook App is excellent and also provides Gmail Push.

That said, none of the "push" apps has ever worked as well for me as the Native Exchange push does.

For example:

Native Exchange Gmail - When I get a notification... I can turn on Airplane mode, go to my email and the header and body is there... pre-fetched.

Gmail App or any other "push" app seems to only push the notification. If I go into airplane mode after getting the notification, the app tries to fetch the email at the time of loading the app... which is mostly pointless IMO.

Thanks, this is what I have been doing in the meantime. I too prefer the native Mail app. I guess Apple must have plugged the hole in iOS 11 which allowed the hack to work.

I use the native Gmail app and for "Fetch new data", "Push" is selected. When I open the app, after 1-2 seconds it refreshes and shows new messages. Those messages should already be there waiting for me when I open the app...

This hasn’t worked for a while now for newer devices.

I used to forward. Then I decided to try gmail. Now I use an app called email (link below). I love it. I don’t think I’ll ever go back. And the icon is very similar to stock, if that’s something that matters.

I still keep the stock mail app installed and have it set not to alert me. My reason for this is to allow me to respond to email links. Apple STILL hasn’t allowed us to pick a default. You either need the mail app installed or copy and paste. Much easier to just have the mail app installed.

I use the exact same one. I tried the Gmail app and just wasn't for me. really enjoy this email app and you're right about the icon looking similar. I like that too.

When you click a link in Gmail, it asks use Safari or another installed browser. It is a recent change.
If that's a response to me, I am actually talking about clicking an email on a webpage in a browser. For example I see something on cragislist I like. I click the email link and my option is either to use APple's stock app, or copy and paste the email link, enter my own title, etc. It's just faster and more convenient to click the persons email link and get immediately to typing the body. Saves a few seconds only, but when I can just as easily keep Apple's app installed and not send me double alerts, I may as well. I just set it to download whatever the minimum emails is. Don't remember which.

Thanks, I gave this a try and really like it! I just can't find a way to browse my many Gmail folders. Do you know how to do this? I don't want to "add" them to my list on the left of the screen, just want to jump right to different folders ad hoc like I can in the Gmail app.

It’s not quite as fast but click the button on the top left, then click the account. It will show you all the folders within the account.

More drastic, but on the advice of a friend who'd already done it I just got rid of all my Gmail folders 😱

Search has got to the point now where it's unnecessary IMO - all that time wasted filing things away into folders, likely never to be looked at again ... YMMV but my Gmail is now 'Inbox', 'Sent' and 'All emails' (plus the occasional 'Starred').

Feels good!
