Do they mean encrypting your iTunes backups?
iCloud backups are encrypted by default but in iTunes you have to select encryption on the Summary page of your device.
Do they mean encrypting your iTunes backups? ...not sure possibly can't get the message to show again without removing re installing the app, which is working fine

Device encryption is automatic when you use a passcode on your iPhone. iCloud backups are encrypted as well, only iTunes backups are optionally encrypted. I remember that unencrypted iTunes backups don’t store some (potentially) sensitive data, like health-related and message history. Perhaps apps that use Apple’s APIs for encrypted storage do the same.

Can someone answer why the app doesn't show in iTunes via macbook? -do apps only show if I do a backup via usb?
No, Wi-Fi should do the same. Have you synced your iPhone? Alternatively, just download the app via iTunes. You only need a copy of the app on your Mac when you want to restore your iPhone, as the backup doesn’t contain the apps. With iCloud backups they are downloaded automatically. The apps that you don’t have in iTunes will not be restored.
Good to know the reasons for encrypting iTunes data. I honestly never really considered it beyond your iTunes account info (which I assumed was encrypted automagically). Guess not?
Did I read a previous poster correctly when they said that messages were part of iTunes? Another thing I had no clue about. Sometimes it's hard to tell what is/isn't handled by specific segments of Apples systems. Especially with the behemoth that's iTunes has become.

(Pension app is in effect my retirement fund investments (debited from monthly salary)
My Pension app for example is installed from iTunes store via iPhone.
When I view my apps (iPhone view) via macbook 'sort by date added' most recent date is 25/4/15
Whereas my pension app was installed yesterday 07/08 =I have done multiple syncs since yesterday
Though the home screen view shows a little pictures of my pensions app.
I suppose I could download the app via macbook.
My initial concern was the data being held and the security warning recommending encryption.

Thanks that was my initial concern as I've been making changes to my 'selection' of future salary funded investments.
it's a great wee app though I won't often been making investment changes its excellent to track unit prices/growth rate
