encrypt time machine to external drive

Does encrypting a time machine external drive make the drive useless for anything other than time machine?

Will I be able to use available space for other things?

The drive can be for anything. Encrypting the Time Machine backup is no way limits you.

Thanks for the reply, intending to put a WinClone & Carbon Copy Cloner backup on there too.
