I have encrypted an external Sata SSD connected to my MM M1 12.2 via Finder context menu. Now I noticed that in the Black Magic benchmark the read and write performance is no longer nearly 500 but only 200. Is this normal ?

You probably haven't completed the encryption yet. To do so, the computer has to read and then write back every bit on the drive. That could take hours or days depending on how large the device is. But once it's complete, you should see the same transfer rates that you had when it was unencrypted. Bottom line, encryption won't slow you down. It's all done in hardware on the M1 machines.

Depending on the amount of data. Perhaps off load the data to your device. Reformat the SSD, and then encrypt it, and reload the data. I have an encrypted microSD card in my Windows Surface, encrypted with Veracrypt, and I don't feel the data transfers are slow.

Also perform recovery solutions on the encrypted drive. I have backed up the header on my encrypted card.
