I was looking at the MacRumors Buyers Guide and noticed for the Macbook pro their recommendation not to purchase because it was approaching the end of its cycle. Being that the 17" umbp (the one I am interested in) was just recently released how is it that it is approaching the end of its cycle?

I think the only way this makes sense is that the 15s were released in October and since then got a slight bump in cpu speed from 2.53 to 2.66. However, there was no other upgrade (GPU/hard drive/battery etc.) so this might not "count." If you follow the previous 8 month trends, then there should be an updated one in June. I find it unlikely that they would keep the same computer completely unaltered past august.
