Energy Drinks,Bottle Water, Starbucks Coffee and Our money is disappearing

I think those are the least of everyone's financial problems. Lucky for me though I have a water purifier. So I don't get sucked into buying that bottled stuff...

I brew my own yerba mate or green tea every day and tote it around with me in a water bottle. BUY drinks? Grossly overpriced. I don't like tap water though so I recently bought a fairly high quality water purifier (basically, the best you can get without getting a reverse osmosis purifier). Not only are store made /bought drinks expensive, but they don't taste that good either.

One of my favourite satirical headlines during the period when the mars rover was looking for water;

Lack of bottled water on mars indicates intelligent life.

my girlfriend works at starbucks, so i get a LB of coffee free a week and drinks when i go in there when she is working.

I've been in Starbucks several times and they give me coffee too.. I don't know anybody in there either.

Did you stop and notice how they last few years that bottle water ,energy type drinks and starbucks coffee are making everyones money dissapear into their cash registers?

Would this thread not have been more timely a decade ago, when Starbucks was expanding recklessly and bottled water was a major growth market, and not today, when Starbucks is closing large numbers of locations and the bottled water market is stagnant?

Or are we going to decry the growing menaces of feathered hair and gangster rap, too?

Forget the cost of water. Ever notice how expensive water bottles are nowadays?

Just to give you an example using relative numbers: In Australia, a bottle of water is around $2.50 to $3.00. A plastic bottle of water from Nalgene, Camelbak, and Sigg + all other manufacturers of aluminium and stainless steel bottles cost between $20-30. I recently went looking for a smaller 400 ml bottle of water to keep in my man-bag (my 900 ml bottle is overly big), and the bottle cost $18.50. It's not like it COMES with water inside it already. It's just plastic. Come on. I remember when Nalgene bottles were $9, and that was for a 1 litre (1000 ml) bottle only 8 years ago.

So I think most agree that beverage industry is a big money maker.

If you can imagine pre starbucks and someone said hey im going open a coffee shop up and charge $5 a drink make it real fancy do you think it will work? Most would have said no your nuts no one will pay overprice for coffee
Well it worked and we missed out of the lottery style income

What if this was you?

I only drink Fiji water and I must say I do look cool carrying it around:p

It's not bad, either. Consistently it has the best taste of any bottled water I've had.

Although, I usually carry a refilled Bombay Sapphire bottle for my water needs. Looks even more cool than a Fiji bottle. :)

Sure, beverages may make a lot of money, but I think you are looking at this a little to simply...

Take a bottle of water for instance.
Sale Price: $1.50
Cost of Components: $0.20 (guessimate)
Gross: $1.30

^-I think you are simply thinking about that. Let's add a few more numbers...
Sale Price: $1.50
Cost of Components: $0.20 (guessimate)
Cost to deliver: $0.05
Portion that goes to rent of manufacturing plant: $0.05
Portion that goes to paying utility bills: $0.10
Portion that goes to marketing: $0.05
Portion that goes to paying office salaries: $0.10
...many more costs.

In the end, the profit on a bottle of water may only be 5 cents. So, its not as big of a money maker as you may think.
