Quisling!!!

Well! What a good little fat person you are Mr Smith! I hope someone tosses you a diet coke!!! Internalize society's attitudes so you will fit in better. That way you will show the bigots of the world that you are just like them; hate yourself and turn on your own kind to be one of the group. This is psych 101 stuff, members of all stigmatized groups risk self-hatred. But since you don't believe in excuses, there is a certain cowardice in it. It is far easier to apologize and degrade yourself than fight back. It is one of the reasons why the prejudice still exists. I could be you so easily. I know the dynamics inside and out. It is more important to attempt to conform to the norms than succeed. I could eat an entire cake in front of fatphobes, then say I will start my diet tomorrow and get more approval than fast and say I love my body the way it is. (And I do because the ONLY opinion that counts when I look in the mirror is my own. You will never know that. You can only look at yourself through the eyes of others!) I speak up because I can; fat prejudice is far from the only cause I have taken on and when push comes to shove I can't count how many people have hidden behind my size 18 skirts. I speak out for those not ready yet, but I have to say I HATE that people like yourself benefit from my efforts.

To other poster - I didn't read the article at all. My browser is too old and can't be upgraded. What I objected to was the insensitive way it was presented here. With all the problems facing both the U.K and the U.S. fatness is hardly rock bottom. Did the OP even think about how offensive to fat people that might be? (The non quislings at least!) Think it is concidence there is more outrage for some mom than those who started the subprime mess? And one can promote nutrition without moralizing or demonizing. In fact, it is far more effective that way!!! The article was obviously intended to provoke outrage against parents and there are fish for every bait.

As far as pollution playing a role in obesity - GOOGLE! Some of the top scientist think so! Furthermore, the whole calories in vs out baloney has been debunked. They have already proven that lab animals exposed to certain kinds of chemicals can retain weight on very little food. Normally I provide a link but with people this prejudiced there is no point in me closing my window and coming back. If fitness is the only thing one bases one's superiority on, it is threatnening when one finds out they can't lord it over anyone anymore.

I am not going to spend any more time arguing, I have better things to do. I just feel sorry for the children!!! Lets raise yet one more generation of eating disorders and people so distracted with their scales and their self-hatred they fail to see how the world is falling apart!

You completely misunderstood. You are the one who has spent 25 years worrying about your weight until either you've become numb to your situation or you've built a psychological wall around you. I, on the other hand, have no hang-ups or chips on my shoulder about my weight at all. On the other hand, I realize that it is not good and I keep trying to lose it. When the doctor/family tell me I need to lose weight I listen. Not because I'm giving in to the weight police but because they are talking sense. There's no cowardice involved. Cowardice would be pretending everything's fine.

You say you love the way you are, yet your rants are so full of hate against society and its 'anti-fat nazis'. It's pretty shocking.

FYI: I'm fat and they let me into England. It was great and they fed me dessert and food and all kinds of goodies.

There is hope for us yet!

No, it hasn't been "debunked". If it were debunked, then all of physics would collapse in upon itself. There's a difference between acknowledging the impact of outside forces and attributing causation.

You can provide links that imply some level of correlation, but you can't provide links that honesty attribute causation. Additionally, there's a huge difference between superiority and a modicum of personal pride in the end result of a lot of hard work. I'm sorry you can't see the difference.

Now, there's a huge difference between accepting one's appearance (a commendable act) and providing a nutritionally unsound diet to a toddler in your care. It's interesting to note that when vegan parents abused their child with a poor diet that eventually led to it's death are monsters (and all vegans were summarily ostracized), but if overweight parents are feeding their child a steady diet of chips, fries and coke, it's society's collective body issues that are to blame. An adult is an adult and can take responsibility for their own lives, a toddler can not.

Any more closet chunkies on MR?

Something tells me if they're chunkies, being in a closet won't be nearly as comfortable as one might think. I've been in a closet in England and it's small...not very ass-friendly for us "chunkies"!

If this represents the absolute base of English behavior - I'm moving to London next week. Not to minimize what this woman did to her child, but far worse is going on in the country where I reside.

As a fat child I am appalled and disgusted by those making such a big deal over chubby children. The psychological harm done to them by viewing their bodies as a national tragedy is far worse than being fat. I don't see how any thinking, reasonably intelligent adult could not see this. I know the only problems I ever had with my weight were caused by other peoples obsession over it. I turned into a moderately fat adult - 5'7", 220lbs who has no problem going up and down the stairs to my fourth floor walk up or walking 5 miles a day. Not only that, but I really don't look close to 50 and I have no doubt it is ampleness that keeps me youthful. There is not a single person I know who I would trade bodies with. I must also say that this Mac board is one of the most narrow minded I have ever encountered when it comes to insensitivity on weight issues. My screen is waving in and out as we speak and it really makes me think twice about my next computer brand purchase!!!

Personally, I have no bias against chunky people, morbid obesity is another matter. The fact that this thread about a baby chafed your nerves so badly that you came in here ranting, shows much about how insecure you are about yourself.

Furthermore, you shouldn't start generalizing MR board if you do not want others to generalize fat people.

Maybe we can find another link to the article in a more friendly format...

If you had been able to read the article, then you would have seen that the issue was not that the child was overweight, but that the diet her mother was feeding her was responsible for the weight. The child did not have a chance to NOT be overweight, nor would any of us if we ate what she was fed. French fries, chocolate sauce, and coke. Who gives a toddler a Coke??????? Caffeine and sugar, and a developing toddler do not mix. I am betting the child has behavioral issues as well, due to the hyperactive mixture...

That is why people are upset. It is not the fact that the baby is fat, it is what she is eating that is causing people to talk about this.

But if the actually read the article, he wouldn't have been able to get on his soapbox and act like a self-righteous know-it-all. ;)
