Hey guys. I'm thinking about getting my laptop engraved tomorrow at the Gizmodo Gallery in NYC. I was trying to think of what to put on it. Right now I have:

"Byte me"
:apple:

"Take a byte
:apple:
out of me"

Any ideas?

Hmmmm. Tough decision.

Maybe I should go with something nonchalant. More unobtrusive, something that doesn't kill the resale value.

How about, "I'm A Happy Sausage"?

I don't really find that amusing or funny, nevertheless the value would plummet.

How about:

"Suck it Windows"
"Byte me Windows"
"No problems here"
"Genius computers for genius people"

What about
"Designed by Microsoft ©"

I actually wanted to write this on my iPod nano but finally I bought it in a shop so no customization.

you know if you etch the batterey cover you can always replace that... defeats the point as you cant see it but I am probably going to get that laser etched to see how it turn out before i get the rest done

This would definitely void your warranty: Link to Apple Warranty Agreement (PDF)

Page 2> Top paragraph> At least one of those covers modification.

I don't think so. The relevant part says:

"(e) to a product or part that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple"

This is a cosmetic modification and would not alter the "functionality or capability" so it should be all good.

Now, something like Colorware would probably void it because in that case the computer is disassembled, but I'd think laser etching would be fine.

IMO Apple thinks that anything it doesn't do or offer as a customization to a Mac is a warranty voider.

This may not void your warranty for a new battery, but if you have a screen issue or your logic board goes bad, they sure as hell aren't going to give you RMA you a computer for one that's been etched.

How would you find out for sure that it would or would not void the warranty? Laser engraving is very enticing to me.

Best way is to call Apple and ask a rep.

That will get varied responses. Some reps will say, yes, it voids warranty, others will say it doesn't and the only harm is resale or other factor that doesn't influence warranty.

A rep doesn't necessarily represent Apple as a whole. I think it will not void it, but hey! I may be wrong.

So I decided not to get it etched. But my friend did get his MacBook Pro etched with dragon logos on the side. I'll post pictures later.
