I recently updated my MB Pro to Catalina and Epson Scan was no longer compatible. So I went to Epson's website and downloaded what was available for Mac OS 10.15: the new Epson Scan 2 program and a new driver. The program starts up but in the opening window where it should list available printers none are listed and the Refresh button doesn't do anything. The printer is listed in System Preferences. I tried rebooting but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

Might help to know the Epson model.

Per Epson, even though they have Catalina compatible software, might not work with the device you have.

Note: Epson Scan is not available for some products running in macOS 10.15. You can use Apple's Image Capture software instead. To use Image Capture, install Epson's ICA Scanner Driver for Image Capture. Go to the Downloads tab on your product's support page, and download and install the ICA Scanner Driver for Image Capture.

What VERSION of Catalina are you currently using?
If it's 10.15.2, upgrade to 10.15.3 and try again.

If the Epson software won't work, you could try "VueScan".
It supports nearly everything out there.

I'm using 10.15.3 and it's a Worforce 630. Epson doesn't appear to specify which products Epson Scan is not available for, but as this is an older model I wouldn't be surprised if it's in that category. Has anyone used Apple's Image Capture with a scanner?

So I downloaded ICA Scanner Driver for Image Capture and scanning on the Workforce 630 using Image Capture worked. Thanks.

I had never used it before but I actually like Image Capture better than Epson Scan. Also, if Epson can provide a driver for Image Capture that works with my old printer, why couldn't they get get Epson Scan 2 to work with it? Strange.

Recently had a lengthy interaction with Epson Support on this issue. I have an Epson XP-410 (purchased in 2013) and am currently running MacOS 14.6/Mojave on a 2015 MBP, so hardly a bleeding-edge setup. For those in similar situations, and concerned by the looming obsolescence of 32-bit apps like Epson Scan v.4.0.1 (2012), today I learned that there is indeed an update, called Epson Scan 2, and which will run on the XP-410, but it requires MacOS 15.0 or higher. Accordingly I will upgrade to Epson Scan 2 when I upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur, unless I decide to buy a newer printer in the meantime.
I am new to the MacRumors forums, so I'd be grateful for any suggestions for other forums in which this post might be useful. Thanks !

Sorry, but I can't see your issue?

Epson Scan v.4.0.1 is not obsolete unless YOU make it so by upgrading to Catalina or beyond. 32-bit apps are not obsolete - just MacOS Catalina & beyond won't support them...previous systems (e.g. like your current macOS 14.6) will.

If you don't need to upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur then you have no need for the 64-bit Epson Scan 2, so stay with the 32-bit Epson Scan.

If you are 'forced' to upgrade to Catalina or Big Surprise for the sake of some tiny new feature, then you simply switch to the 64-bit version.

Um, yeah, “tyc”, that’s pretty much exactly what I said — I won’t be upgrading to Epson Scan 2 *because I don’t need to*, but I will if I do decide to try “Big Surprise” (?!?) later. My post was simply intended to share the results of my interaction with Edson (which took a lot of back&forth over several days before we arrived at a solution) in the hope of saving time & aggro for others in my situation, because Epson’s “support” site is far from clear on the issue. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear.

Also the issue of what is and is not “obsolete” is hardly as clear-cut as you seem to imply. If I’m using 32-bit software and Apple announces that 32-bit software is *no longer supported* in the newest versions of their OS, I don’t know how else to describe those legacy 32-bit apps *if* I choose to upgrade to the new OS for whatever “tiny new features” it offers. (And I think a lot of Apple software engineers would be ”Surprised” at your casual dismissal of their efforts to put together a major new version of the core OS —not simply an incremental maintenance upgrade—, regardless of whatever substantive improvements it may or may not contain in your candid estimation or anyone else’s. That is, of course, a whole other conversation.) But thanks for listening !

Sorry, read it as a query rather than a statement o_O

MacBook Pro & Epson scanner V600

Did Epson remove the "Color Restoration" capability from Epson Scan 2 software for Mac??
