Epson Stylus DX3800 can't connect

I have just purchased a refurb MacBook Pro 2012 with Mountain Lion - Both Apple and Epsom have told me I can't use my Epson Stylus DX3800 with it.. but just wondered if there is a MacWizard out there who could help me get round this.
I've plugged in the printer usb and it recognises it but that's all. I am not a technical person so don't what to try next.

Install Gutenprint (third-party driver set):
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

DX3800 is listed as supported.

Then just Add the printer in Print & Scan Prefs - same as with factory driver.

Thank you so much it has taken me an hour of fiddling but now it WORKS and has just printed.

Really appreciate you helping.. and thanks to the guys who offer the free software.
