i've read that this is now an option, under system preferences in monterey; a useful trick if, for example, you're selling your mac (or, for that matter, starting over). but i can't find it.

does it exist (yet)?

Are you sure you're looking in the right place? I've got it on mine:

Will going through the process of erase all content and settings produce a duplicate listing in texting forwarding devices on the phone and iPad, as that happens if one doesn't log out of the Apple ID, iMessage, and FaceTime before doing a clean install.

edited to add: After upgrading to Monterey, I performed the erase all content and settings option. I did not have to log out of my phone and iPad first. No duplicated devices to worry about under the "text forwarding" listing.

I tried it on my 2018 Mini and it worked as advertised, great feature. I had performed an upgrade and it left the installer icon with a question mark in Launchpad. It erased the Data partition and removed the leftover icon.

so did it ask you to log into a network in the process? the support page mentions that might happen, appears to be something about activation.
