Yeah but your neck is bent way down looking at it. As you get older that gets more painful.

Different issue. Poster I was responding to was complaining that the iPad was too heavy to hold, not that his neck hurt. I've already agreed earlier in this thread that reading iPad for too long makes my neck hurt, but that has nothing to do with how much the iPad weighs. Even if the iPad were as light as a piece of paper, you can't hold it up in the air for long periods of time, because if you hold your arm up in the air for a period of time, it'll get tired even if you aren't holding anything. Therefore, using an iPad anywhere away from a desk will require that we bend our neck down to look at it. And I don't expect there to be a solution to this problem in the near future.

Have you guys had similar concerns with your iPad? If so, what do you do to keep the ergonomic strain at a minimum?

The iPad is fine in some ergonomic situations.

For the bed or bathroom or anyplace I have to hold it up, I greatly prefer using one of my 7" tablets. They're more like holding up a large paperback.

A 7" iPad would be much appreciated.

How are you holding the iPad?

I just do this.

Not heavy at all in this position. This, btw, is also how I hold a hard cover book.

You have to stare down hard in that position...and that's the point of the OP.

Boy you got that wrong.

My point was.....Too heavy to hold up at a proper angle. You would not have to set deep in your lap if it was way lighter.

I disagree. If it was lighter, you could hold it up at a better angle for longer, yes, but eventually your arms would get tired and you would have to put it down on your lap.
