finder is not responding on my macbook pro and I'm getting an error -1712. How do i fix this? when i boot up the laptop using the power button it takes forever to load the page..It's not even emptying my trash when i tried to do it..pls help...

Probably a bad hard drive. Don't listen to any of that nonsense that says to boot the install DVD and check SMART status in disk utility, it's nonsense and doesn't give any valuable information. If you have a way to boot the MBP in question from another machine, like through target disk mode, you can run SMART Utility which will tell you if the drive is failing or not. If it's under warranty just take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.

Smart utility isn't always reliable.. for instance, just bought a retail boxed hitachi hard drive and already smart utility says the drive is failing.. This drive is BRAND NEW and never opened..
I then decided to run a diagnostic in windows and sure enough - the drive has no errors or any problems. Smart utility is crap compared to windows and PC diag software.

A hard drive can be failing right out of the box and can pass a diagnostic program. Your example proves nothing.
