I asked him to re-install printer drivers which he did - no joy. I have just chucked them in the bin and re-installed them....twice! second time it now prints. Case closed :)

    -199 error semi-explained

A -199 error technically means "mapReadErr--map inconsistent with operation". In human language, that means a file the Mac is trying to read, is damaged in some fashion--there's probably something wrong with its resource fork. Reinstalling the printer driver was a good idea, but apparently none of the printer driver files were the one the Mac was having trouble with. As to which file the Mac was unsuccessfully able to read in this case, possibly it was the desktop printer file, which is a sort of folder alias, but even this type of file can have a damaged resource fork. You can trash a desktop printer icon, and the printer software will create a new one. It's also possible that some other file the Mac was trying to read during printing, was damaged, so you'd have to figure out the names of all the other files that this operation was trying to read, and trash and reinstall them, or let the Mac OS and/or printer software recreate them--maybe a preferences file, etc.

A -199 err is not indicative of hard drive directory damage, contrary to what some people have theorized, though running a directory repair utility is always a nice maintenance step.
