Yup, I'm still having absolutely no luck with upgrading to iOS 5 on either my iPhone or iPad. My wife cannot update her iPad2 on her own Mac. Really? Still? Are we the only ones left??

You have permissions issues. Run disk utility and verify the hdd. Then click verify disk permissions, then run repair disk permissions.

Finally got it sorted out. All along I was avoiding DFU mode but finally gave that a go. Success!
