error -43 cannot delete files? & item in use

i have a file on my external hd i cant delete with ERROR-43

items in trash i can't delete


operation can't be completed because item is in use

is there a fix

From a Terminal: rm -f filename

Reboot in safe mode by booting while holding down the shift key and see if you can then empty the trash.

Forgot to add: since it's the Trash not emptying, need to "cd /Volume/volumename/.Trash"

Then can do rm command.

still no joy

ive googled too, its a file from my external hd which i deleted, it says its in use.
in safe mode it doesnt show, the trash is empty
but the files show on normal bootup

Run repair disk from Disk Utility on the exterior drive.
