Hi Folks, I am beyond frustrated. My XS Max takes great videos, if I could get it off the phone...

I get the dreaded device attached to the system malfunctions message. THis is when copying though Windows Explorer. It works 1\30 times if I keep switching cables and ports.

I know about and have tried the "keep originals" settings. The problem is, no only does it shrink the file size but when it copies over, Windows or Camtasia can't play it. Any ideas, I cant imagine this isnt widespread.

How about uploading to Dropbox or sending to iCloud etc. and then downloading in Windows? Not exactly the streamlined but, it might work better for you.
Yeah I guess I can do that but coming from and Android, I can't believe people accept this. I got 2 files to copy before it died again..

In the middle of several books.

If I was using Windows and having trouble doing this simple task, I would be frustrated as well. It could be a Windows issue as easily as it could be an Apple issue. If you have AppleCare, give Apple a call and see what they say. Calling Microsoft would be a waste of time.

I wish I had a better answer for you.

It's not a windows issue. Apple products notoriously don't like windows and there are all kinds of issues transferring media. With android it's pretty much copy and paste.

If you have Windows 10, you need to download the HEVC/HEIC codec from MS Store app. It’s $0.99 because it’s not included anymore. Or download a codec package online.

I have no issues transferring files from iPhone to Windows. Just make sure you install iTunes from Apple website instead of the MS Store because it may not have the drivers. If it’s driver issue, connect iPhone and go into Device Manager and expand the Portable Devices and Update the driver.

Or upload it to Google Photos or Dropbox and then download them.

Are you using the original mode setting then? I ask because that is the most common fix out there except, when you compare the file sizes, the ones that come over with that setting and play with the codex you mentioned are like half the size. That mean even though it says its original, it's actually compressed compared the file set on automatic.

I have this exact issue with my iPhone XSM and all of my prior iPhones (6s, 5s) over the year copying to Windows 7 & 10 over USB -- multiple PC's. USB ports, cables. If I only copy a couple hundred photos at a time it is usually okay. But if I want to copy all of my photos/videos (I have like 10K or so now, it fails every time. It starts copying, usually gets to a few hundred and then quits.

This is a big PIA. I've never tried copying to a MAC as I don't have one. I've tried using Windows Explorer, Windows Photo, etc. I have the new codec plugin. I use Google Photo and Amazon Photo as well.

Best solution I've been able to come up with is to sync all of my originals to Amazon which then lets me download all of them from the cloud back onto my hard drive.

This is a huge issue. For example, I took photos at a Wedding on my phone back in November, It's only a few hundred photos and a few videos. But to try and go back to that time period, select them, and transfer them to my PC is incredibly frustrating. I spend a couple hours on it and wasn't confident I got more than half of them.

Is there a 3rd party software solution that is more robust? I vague recall using Picasa, but this program has been deprecated. I don't have Light Room or any of the newer Adobe software.

FYI, I just researched this again and have just downloaded the "Photo Transfer App"

http://phototransferapp.com/

And it is working very well. It doesn't let me select photos by date, easily. But I can download hundreds at a time or ALL in sort of a backup mode. It's over wifi (app on iPhone and app on Win10). Seems very robust. Have transferred thousands of photos so far with no issue.

It can automatically convert hiec to JPG, too.

Costs $6.99 (one time) for the full version. Plus an optional $2.99 annual (not needed) for some extra features.

Supports USB transfer too, but I haven't tried it.

One thing about a lot of these transfer apps is they mimic the "keep originals" setting on the iphone. When I compared file sizes, they were heavily compressed. I finally did just check keep originals to get a file off, but it turned a 7+GB file to just over 3GB. Crazy that no one has caught on to this yet.
