error occurred whilst moving messages to mailbox Trash

I have an imac and have bought a mac book, both using snow leopard. I can move messages on my imac to Trash but this is not recognised on my macbook. When I try to repeat delete on macbook the error message comes up. This is a limited size and so I keep filling up my memory - what can I do as my inbox is huge?

Try moving files out of the trash first, and then empty it. Then put them back in, and empty it.
