Error reading External HDD - Please help!

Hi,

I have been using a Mid-2010 iMac since new and it finally gave out on me (GPU issue) So I've bought a used 2014 model.

However I'm having the following issue when plugging in the removed HDD from that machine to my new iMac.
I have removed the hard drive and put it into an external USB enclosure and receive the following: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

I know the drive was working fine before my iMac pooped it. It's formatted HFS+.


Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible your old hard drive you removed from the 2010 iMac somehow was corrupted when the GPU gave out? A 2010 iMac has been around for quite some time and it may be coincidental that the hard drive failed at the same time.

This could be the case.

You're going to have to test it in a different enclosure to eliminate the enclosure as the culprit.

What is the size of the drive and what model enclosure is it in now?

You could reseat the drive into the case. Maybe it's just not well connected.

Power up a linux or windows system and use a disk tool such as gparted to check the disk

Sounds like a corrupted directory or disk drivers.
If you can't get it to mount in a different enclosure, you may have to resort to some kind of "data recovery" strategy.

This is what "keeping backups" is all about...
