Now that Apple's secretly working on a software fix, does this mean this video card glitch is NOT a hardware problem, therefore I do NOT need to get a replacement unit?

It is quite certainly a hardware issue, but it can be solved by a software workaround. Your story fits their workaround with power cycling the display to "fix" it again. If it doesn't reoccur you should be fine. Just keep in mind that when it comes back, especially after the fix - you bring it in immediately..
 
For sure, I've been praying for a recurrence!!

And I am getting extended warranty, so if it happens after three years, whatever.

Well, it seems like my prayers have been answered...

Listening to iTunes, typing up notes on MS Word 2011. Maybe Steam running in the background, no games active though.

Thirty hours in two weeks of gaming does no damage, but a word processor brings down nVidia. It's a hardware glitch for sure.

Going on a date with a Genius tomorrow. This baby better last until after my exam! :mad:

Anyone else still experiencing problems - NOT from waking from sleep or from connecting to an external monitor, but rather just randomly after it's been on for a while?

I have had this issue once while I installed the 10.6.5 upgrade, shortly before it was done and shutting down.

Apple has acknowledged issues and say they will be fixed through an upcoming software fix. It only affects one display panel type as far as I know. Putting the computer into standby, and waking it up again should fix the issue temporarily.

Can you look up your panel type and post it here, please? Apple menu -> System preferences -> Displays -> Color -> Open Profile -> scroll way down -> click the last entry -> post the value of the model line :)

I will compare it to the display model of the MacBook Air I have seen this on tomorrow and report if it's a match.

My Air: BTO 11.6", 1.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD. Display panel model = 00009CF2. Software version = 10.6.5.

This doesn't match the model type that I have seen have some issues... The fact that it doesn't go to standby either tells me it's not a display issue but rather a video card issue, so most likely a real hardware problem after all. At least it's getting worse so you will hopefully be able to demo it to Apple so you can get it exchanged.... Good luck! :)

Now its really the time to get it changed then. Ask the Apple care guy to see your you tube videos for proof :D

Not necessarily. You get a 12 month warranty and most of these problems show up right away.

I saw the exact same video glitch while installing the 10.6.5 update also. I haven't seen it before or after though.

A model that is not affected is: 9CF0 (13")

I think we should create a new thread to compile all display models, because there are a whole bunch of threads right now on this flicker/freeze issue.

I'm not sure why the display model would matter since it would seem to be video chip or software. However, mine is 11" 9cf2.
 
I had the same issue but my previous MBA froze up with different colors...I went back to apple store and they looked familiar with this issue on new MBA. It only took 5 mins before the care decided to get it replaced.

So I am using new MBA now. so far so good...
 
Get it replaced already. That's what the warranty is for. I can't believe what some people will put up with just to not exchange a product.
