Hi. I've tried to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. The process was interrupted and when I try to plug my phone I get a message saying iTunes was interrupted while restoring the contacts of the iPhone and if I would like to restore this iPhone again now. I click Continue Restore but then I get this error message: 'An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-94)'. The other option is to Delete Backup, which I don't want to do because I'll likely lose all my messages, etc. Bit annoyed. Any idea what I need to do?
    Thanks.

I had the same message, and ultimately had to do a factory restore.

Did that mean losing all messages, etc?!

Oddly for me, no. My old text messages and even the camera roll of photos were there when I finally (an hour or so later) got my device working and on ios5.

The option I have is now to set up as a new iPhone or restore from a backup, which was created last night. Would you recommend restoring as a new? Thanks.

Yeah, I think that's actually the choice I had as well. So I set up new, and then finally restored from my most recent good back up.

Mine did the same thing. I had all my apps where I wanted them and such. But when it finished, it showed nothing selected under music, apps, etc. They were all unchecked even though my device was fully restored. When I started checking things and setting it up, it said not enough space. It was going to double all my music on it. In the end I just set it up as new, but any apps that were already on it that I selected when I set it up again in iTunes kept all their settings. And I didn't lose any texts or camera roll or any of that. So it was just a tedious hour of getting all my apps where I wanted them and then setting it up to sync my music when I went to bed.

Thanks. My only concern is by setting the phone up as new, I'll lose over 2 years worth of messages and pictures... not something I want. Did you also restore from backup or just load up music and apps fresh?

When I got the error message, it had actually restored everything correctly. So my phone was exactly as it had been before, only on iOS5. But when I went under the music and apps and photos tabs, they were all unchecked. When I checked the apps tab, I clicked on the apps I wanted and hit sync. It said it was going to remove apps and their settings, but as long as I had checked them it kept their settings. I don't remember what I did to get it to remove the music so I could resync that. At first it was trying to double all my music, which I didn't have space for. It's like it had forgotten my phone was synced to that computer and was setting it up from a new computer.

I'm running into that problem where I haven't got enough disk space now for the backup. When you were prompted with the message saying the update had been interrupted and had the option to try again or delete the backup, did you delete the backup?
    Thanks for the help.

Finally, an end to my journey. I setup as a new iPhone and decided to just give up on it. Then I got bored and decided to try one last time, and it worked. So just restore as a new phone, go through the whole process, then restore AGAIN as one of the old backups.

I did the same thing on my iPad WiFi, however I have not merged to iCloud yet, since I am not upgrading my iPhone 4 yet, and I am waiting to get my 4S tomorrow, also I had to setup Lion on my Mini for it all to play nice.

I think doing a backup and then factory reset is the quickest way to get iOS5 on any device but some may have other ways.

Yep, that's pretty much what works. What a fiasco. Glad yours is up and running too. I was impressed when I backed up with one of my old ones that everything, including camera roll and SMS messages, was there.

Yeah, I had this problem also with both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. After two tries on each, when i got the query box i selected "cancel." Everything seems to be on both devices where it should it be. We'll see what happens when I try to sync again tonight.
