errors when downloading software

I have a Mac OS X 10.3.9 and for the past two months I have not been able to update or install software. My Ibook gives me this error:

"Non of the checked updates can be installed

Make sure you have permission to write to /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again.

A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again"

what do I do to be able to update or install new software.

  1. What updates are you talking about?
  2. Have you got the appropriate downloads for your machine?
  3. Is it giving any errors when you try installing them?

Ii cannot update ITunes, or any other automatic update. this should be appropriate for my machine.

the error comes when i funish installing, then it gives me the message i mentioned on my first posting.
 
Having the same problem

I'm having the same problem as the former poster with the "timed out" error message with 7 automatic software updates (namely iTunes, Java, Quicktime, etc.) I've tried running a safe boot, repairing disk utility, and downloading one at a time. I've tried only downloading and not installing. The only thing I have been able to do is download directly from apple's site (iTunes and Security Update), but am just wondering if there's anything more i can do to try to fix the problem, so i don't have to manually update every time.

Oh, by the way, I have OS X 10.4.11
