So I am about to get a new iMac, and I want to install all of the apps from scratch. I could just image the existing one or use migration assistant etc, but for various unexplainable reasons related to OCD I would prefer to start "clean".

I am trying to remember how I got my contacts onto my mac in the first place via iTunes, but that was over 2 years ago and I am getting old. Who can verify what will happen when I plug my iPhone into a virgin iTunes install? Is it going to try to delete all of my contacts or can I safely assume that it will copy my contacts onto the new computer as well as the apps (once properly authorised). I do not trust iTunes because I keep messing up my photo sync and I don't want to do the same with my contacts. I am sure that it's a PEBKAC error.

Assuming that all of your contacts are in your Address Book on your current Mac, you could just File>Export and transfer all of the information to a USB key then File>Import everything on the new iMac.

Yes, they are. That sounds safer to me. Thanks
