Hey folks, anybody have a quick answer to this?

Due to some type of HDD failure, ML directed me to erase the HDD reinstall, so I'm in Recovery mode and am using Disk Utility, but as always, disk utility represents e main drive as both the 1 TB ST3100052..etc AND as the drive I named, (in this case "Disk1") which has ML on it. So erasing both works but I've always wondered why/how can I work with both and which should I be erasing now? Because I'm in ML's recovery mode, will erasing the root representation of this drive "ST3100052.." also erase the emergency partition at ML has put on it? Does none of this matter? kind of confused..

Disk utility errored when trying to erase the root representation, saying could not unmount disk. but easilly erased "Disk1"
