Hello,
Recently, my wife has been complaining of coverage issues at work with AT&T and so I started to explore what can be done with eSIM's in the modern phones.
To that end, since, anecdotally, Verizon has the best coverage, I thought I would try to test out Verizon using the eSIM in my XSM (iOS 13.1.2). NOTE, this XSM was purchased carrier unlocked direct from Apple at release in 2018.
Using the My Verizon App, when I try to check the eligibility of my eSIM IMEI I get the message that "This Device isn't eligible." I get the same message when trying the IMEI of the physical SIM as well.
At first I thought perhaps my phone became locked when I had inserted my AT&T physical SIM a year ago when I got it from Apple. So I submitted and AT&T unlock request. Received confirmation that my phone was unlocked. I then wiped and restored from backup as AT&T requires to unlock iOS devices (though after restoring I did not get the usual message from iTunes that my phone was now unlocked during device activation). I tried Verzion again. Same error.
I then tried T-mobile eSIM and it added fine. So clearly my phone is not locked. I did not try a physical SIM from Tmo, Mint, or Freedom Pop (which I also have). Been using the Tmo service all day in a dual config with my AT&T. No issues save for Family Hotspot sharing (for which I just started a separate thread).
So what gives? Why is Verizon being a PIA? IMHO, eSIM's suck by the way. The fact that you have to go to a store or wait for a card in the mail to move your line from device to device is just STUPID. You'd think the carriers would have a secure way of electronically delivering a QR code so you could just log into your carrier's web page with your account credentials, take a photo of the QR code, and bang your live. Of course carriers don't want you to switch, so they'd never voluntarily make it that easy.
Best,
Jonathan
