I just enabled the ESPN app on my watch & the app is pinned on the top of the face as a notification. There's no notifications or anything so I'm not sure how to get rid of it? It's also pulsating graphic wise

I believe that just indicates that the app is "Running," has nothing to do with notifications. For example if I have a Timer running, the Timer icon is up there - tapping on the icon opens the timer so I can see how long it has to go.

But it's showing even when there's nothing going on within the app. It's odd

It seems like this happens on days when one of my teams has a game. It does not disappear if you shut down the app

Does your watch and/or phone have an ESPN live activity showing? On the watch, that's in the widget screen and on the iPhone on the lock screen/dynamic island.
